Description

First World War memorial, 1920.

MATERIALS: granite cross with lead lettering.

DESCRIPTION: South Somercotes War Memorial is located within the churchyard of the redundant St Peter’s Church (Grade I Listed).

It consists of a rough-hewn Granite wheel cross with a sword carved in relief on its front face. The cross rises from a tapering square plinth on a single stepped base. The front of the plinth has a smoothed recessed panel which carries the leaded inscription, which reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / (NAMES) / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918. / THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY / 1 SAM. 25 10.'
