Description

The Stanhope Memorial is a monument dedicated to Edward Stanhope, Member of Parliament, built in 1894 by E. H. Lingen Barker. It is constructed from limestone ashlar, red sandstone, pink and grey streaked marble, and some copper. The memorial is accessed by three octagonal steps leading up to a moulded octagonal plinth adorned with two narrow bands of red sandstone.

Above the plinth, there are eight pointed, richly cusped openings set under crocketed gables, each supported by marble shafts that feature shaft rings and moulded ashlar capitals and bases. Inside these openings, there is diaper work, with alternate openings displaying an ashlar motif. The south side features a relief of Edward Stanhope, while the east side displays a shield with a castle and rampant lion, inscribed with "Adeo et Rege" on a ribbon below. The north side has another shield, and the west side features a shield along with the inscription: "Erected by public inscription in the memory of the Right Honourable Edward Stanhope Member of Parliament for this Division of the County 1874-1893."

Above these openings are eight openwork arches with trefoiled, pointed heads, supported on marble shafts with shaft rings, and ashlar foliate capitals and moulded bases. A moulded band runs above, leading to eight trefoiled gables topped with wrought iron finials. At the very top, there is a small octagonal copper turret with eight trefoil-headed openings, supported by shafts and tall gables, also featuring wrought iron finials. The memorial culminates in a tall pyramidal roof topped with a wrought iron finial.
