Description

The Church of St Andrew is a parish church that dates back to the 13th century, with significant rebuilding occurring in 1841. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings, squared chalk, and greenstone rubble, topped with slate roofs and a timber and lead bellcote. The church features a nave with a western bellcote and a chancel. All windows are adorned with cusped 19th-century tracery. The west end, made of squared greenstone rubble, includes a two-light window above which is a louvred circular opening. Beneath this window lies a 13th-century cross fleury grave slab. The octagonal bellcote has pointed latticed openings and a shaped lead roof. On the north wall of the nave, there are three two-light pointed windows separated by brick buttresses. The east window in the chancel is a three-light design, while the south wall of the chancel, which is partly made of chalk, features a blocked doorway and a two-light window. The south wall of the nave, constructed of red brick, has a pair of two-light windows and a pointed moulded doorway.

Inside, the church has a 13th-century double chamfered chancel arch supported by octagonal imposts with grotesque human head corbels, one of which appears to have toothache. Most of the interior fittings are from the 20th century, except for a 17th-century octagonal font bowl with a moulded rim and a 14th-century base with a bell-moulded plinth.
