Description

Old Marsh Chapel is a mission chapel with a schoolroom below, built between 1865 and 1867 and restored in 1884. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a pantile roof with stone coped gables. The east gable has a cross finial, while the west gable includes a gabled bellcote with a single pointed opening and a cross finial. The building has a plinth and four dentillated bands, with the upper bands running under the eaves of the north and south fronts.

The chapel is two storeys high with a three-bay south front. To the left, there is a slightly projecting gabled doorway with a higher plinth, featuring a pointed inner doorway with alternating brick and ashlar voussoirs and a plank door. To the right, there are two rectangular three-light mullion windows with flush ashlar quoined surrounds. Above these, a three-light mullion window is flanked by single light windows, one of which has a cinquefoil cusped head, all with flush ashlar quoined surrounds. In the right-hand bay, between the two storeys, there is a band of diamond relief diaper work.

The east end has a three-light mullion window with a flush ashlar quoined surround, and above it, diamond relief diaper work with a round window in the gable containing a quatrefoil, also featuring alternating brick and ashlar voussoirs. The west front has two ashlar dressed rectangular lights and a pointed window above with three pointed lights. The chapel was founded by W. G. Tozer, who was the Bishop of Zanzibar, Jamaica, and Honduras.
