Description
The south entrance gates, screens, and piers to Revesby Abbey were designed around 1848 by William Burn. They are made of cast iron and ashlar. The central pair of gates features knotwork base panels, scrolled mid rails, and rails with scrolls at the top and bottom. An elaborate overthrow includes a cusped central panel with the gilded initials "JBS," representing J. Banks Stanhope, and is topped by three pinnacles. The square gate piers have foliage on the pierced sides and additional pinnacles. On either side of the gates are five similar cast iron screen panels, which also have pinnacles and rest on ball finials above an ashlar plinth. The corners of the structure have extruded semi-circular angles, and the single side panels end in square ashlar piers with moulded cornices and urn finials. The sides of the piers display strapwork and jewelled panels in the Jacobean style.
