Description
The West Street Junction Box is a signal box built in 1875 for the Great Northern Railway. It features a butt brick structure with timber cladding and a Welsh slate roof. The brick base includes a glazing bar window at one end.
The signalman's room is located at first floor level and is fully glazed on all four sides, with six-paned timber windows—eight on the sides and four on the gable ends. The gables are boarded and include decorative carved bargeboards and a timber finial. In 1894, a 60-lever McKenzie and Holland frame replaced the original, and a gate wheel was also installed.
This signal box is notable for being the oldest Great Northern Railway signal box still in use, originally built to manage the northern junction of the main line with the goods line near the West Street level crossing.
