Description

Spain Court consists of a pair of parallel terraces, with Nos 1-7 on the east side and Nos 8-12 on the west side. Nos 1-9 are residential houses, while Nos 10-12 are part of the Blackfriars Art Centre. The buildings date from the early 18th century and have been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, topped with pantile roofs that feature some tumbling to brick coped gables. The east block has three ridge stacks and a simple gable stack, while the west block has two ridge stacks and a single gable.

The terraces are two storeys high with attics. The east block has seven bays, arranged in three groups, each with a pair of doors flanked by a single window, and each of these has a window directly above it. There is a further single window on each floor at the left-hand end. The entrance to No. 1 is located in the northern gable end. The east block also features six attic dormers. The west block has five bays, arranged in two groups similar to the east block, with an additional single window on each floor and a doorway at the right-hand end. There is a blocked doorway between the right-hand end windows and five attic dormers. All windows are glazing bar sashes with segmental brick heads. The doors are 19th-century six-panel designs with lower flush panels and three-pane overlights. The dormers are two-light Yorkshire sashes with segmental lead roofs and lead or brick cheeks. At the south end, a tall garden wall connects the two terraces to Fydell House and features three arched doorways. The houses also have single-storey outshuts at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
