Description
Pickering Grange Farmhouse is a farmhouse consisting of two distinct sections, with the eastern part dating from the 19th century and the western part from the 17th century or earlier. The building features random bonded brickwork with a moulded plinth, half resting on a rubble plinth. It is two storeys tall and has a T or L plan layout, with a blocked doorway that is slightly off-centre in the single unit cross range. The ground floor has three-light casement windows, which are modern replacements, and these windows have segmental heads. The farmhouse also has a dentilled eaves cornice. The timber frame is exposed in both gables of the cross range, showcasing a massive truss and panels with brick infill. To the east of the cross range, there is a large coursed rubbled chimney stack with a plinth, which is a remnant from the earlier house.
The site was originally moated and served as the grange for the abbey of Garendon. It was granted to the abbey around 1140 and was leased to John Pickering in 1531.
