Description

The George is a public house, hotel, and restaurant, dated 1753 as shown by the brickwork beside the door. A cross wing to the left incorporates parts of a 16th-century timber-framed building, although it has been extensively rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. The main block is of red brick with a band course at the first floor level and dentil eaves. The ground floor and gable end of the cross wing are whitewashed. The roof is slate, with brick gable copings and brick chimneys. The main block has three storeys and three bays, with 20th-century wooden casement windows. The ground and first floor windows have top lights and good cambered brick arches; the upper window has single horizontal glazing bars. First and second floor windows have 20th-century louvred shutters. A 20th-century door sits between the left bays, with a flat brick head above it. Projecting to the left is a two-story gabled cross wing with 20th-century cross casements and a single light in the gable end. A later 19th-century brick extension is located to the rear of the cross wing, along with other 20th-century rear extensions. The front bay of the cross wing retains ties and principals from former 16th-century trusses, along with heavy 16th-century floor joists. A rear truss was likely open.
