Description

Burrough Manor House is a manor house, later adapted for residential use, built in 1781. It was altered in the mid-19th century and the early 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with dressings in squared ironstone and limestone ashlar, and has slate roofs. It features a plinth, a band at first-floor level, two sill bands, a moulded eaves cornice, and plain parapets. There are three gable, one lateral and one ridge brick stacks. The house is three storeys high, with five bays on the main north front, flanked by two-storey, three-bay wings. The central bay has a pedimented section with a full-height round-headed recess incorporating flanking pilasters. The central entrance is a six-panel door with a fanlight, flanked by fixed windows with Geometrical glazing bars. To the right of the entrance is a late 19th-century canted bay window with three plain sashes. Above the entrance is a central Venetian window, flanked by single tripartite glazing bar sashes. Above the Venetian window is a central Diocletian window, flanked by smaller tripartite sashes. All the ground-floor sashes have rubbed brick heads. One wing features a projecting pedimented bay with a full-height round-headed recess containing a central fixed light window, flanked by blind openings. Above this is a round-headed two-light casement, flanked by blind openings. The other wing replicates this design with a central panelled door, flanked by blind openings, and above, a round-headed eight-light casement flanked by blind openings. Rainwater heads dated 1781 are on each main gable. The rear elevation has a recessed four-bay centre with dentillated eaves. A glazed door is flanked to the left by four small sashes. Above the door is a round window, flanked to the left by a large canted oriel window and to the right by a glazing bar sash. A two-storey wing to the left has a door flanked to the right by two plain sashes with segmental heads, and above is a glazing bar sash with a segmental head. Another two-storey wing with a flat-roofed two-storey bay window featuring three glazing bar sashes on each floor is situated to the right. A recessed service wing includes a door with overlight and, above it, a clock.
