Description

The Limes is a farmhouse with an adjoining service wing and outbuilding, dating from 1752, with 19th-century additions and early 20th-century alterations. It is constructed from coursed and squared ironstone, partly roughcast, and brick, featuring limestone dressings and slate roofs. The building has projecting quoins and includes three gable ends, a single ridge, and a single lateral brick stack.

The south side of the farmhouse presents a five-bay front. To the left, there is a three-bay section with a moulded central doorcase that features a keystone and curved brackets supporting a wooden hood. The entrance includes a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed and an overlight above. To the left of the door, there is a glazing bar sash window with a moulded ashlar architrave and keystone. To the right, a late 19th-century square bay window contains a plain sash, with another sash window on the left side of the bay. Above this, there are three glazing bar sashes, each with moulded architraves and keystones.

To the right of the main house is the two-storey service wing, which features a 17th-century plank door flanked on the left by a 19th-century casement window and on the right by a 20th-century lean-to toilet. Further to the right is the outbuilding, which has a coped gable and an off-centre 18th-century plank door. This door is flanked on the left by a casement window and on the right by a gabled wing that includes a sliding sash window with a segmental head. Above this wing is a tall staircase light with a segmental head, and to the left are two casement windows, also with segmental heads. Above the outbuilding, there is a datestone inscribed 'GC 1752' and a large sliding sash window. The east gable of the outbuilding features a barred wooden mullioned casement, with a three-light sliding sash above it and a 20th-century casement above that. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to contain an outstanding contemporary staircase.
