Description
The Dower House is an early 18th-century house located on Main Street in Market Bosworth. It was raised in the late 18th century, during which time the fine doorcase was likely added. The building is constructed of brick and features a plain tiled roof. It stands three storeys high and has five bays, with central double doors framed by a fine case that includes a leaded radial fan-light, a tall pediment, and delicate mouldings on the capitals and frieze. The house has tall 18-pane sash windows throughout, except for the attic, which has nine windows. These windows have thick astragals and flat arched heads, along with sill bands and overhanging eaves. The attic storey was added at a later date.
Inside, the original plaster and wood panelling can be found in the principal rooms, along with a staircase that features carved cheeks and turned balusters, three to each tread. The layout is unusual for its time, with a large central hall and the staircase positioned to the right, while the principal rooms are divided between the ground and first floors. The boundary wall along the street includes brick piers topped with stone copings and ball finials, as well as wrought iron railings with spearheads above.
