Description
The former stables to Kirkby Hall, now a motor racing store, date from the early to mid-18th century. The building is constructed of red brick with a partially rendered ground floor. It features a moulded brick eaves cornice beneath a plain tiled hipped roof. The stable block is two storeys high and has a regular facade with a 2:3:2 window arrangement, including a central pedimented projection. On the first floor, there are 2-light, oak-framed casements, while the ground floor retains cross-windows in the two outer bays on the left and in the second bay from the right. There is a blocked window at the extreme right. The ground floor has three entrances in the centre, each with transom lights above. At the rear, there are L-shaped wings with recessed arches on the north side and a carriage arch. The rear wings also show a considerable number of surviving oak-framed cross-windows on the ground floor. At some point, the west and south fronts were covered with a grid of timber battens, which have since been removed from the west side.
