Description
The Stoke Golding War Memorial is a tall granite structure located at the end of a tree-lined approach. It features a ringed, ornate cross atop a tapering octagonal shaft, which is raised on a four-step base. The memorial includes metal lettering set into the faces of the steps. The uppermost two steps bear an inscription dedicated to the First World War, stating: ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF STOKE GOLDING/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS,/ LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT/ THAT THEIR NAME BE NOT FORGOTTEN. The names of 21 individuals who lost their lives in the First World War are listed on the third step. A Second World War inscription was added to the bottom step, reading: SECOND GREAT WAR/ 1939-1945/ LEST WE FORGET, along with the names of 12 additional individuals. The memorial is situated in the rond point of the central path of the cemetery.
