Description
This is a row of three cottages or almshouses located at 20-24 Churchgate. They date back partially to the 17th century and were altered in the 18th century when they were established as almshouses, with further changes made in the 19th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed and squared ironstone rubble, with a brick first storey and a plain tiled roof. Each cottage features a doorway to the right with a chamfered timber lintel and a two-light ovolo moulded stone mullioned window to the left. The first storey has approximately 10-20 courses of 18th-century red brick with blue headers, followed by 19th-century brick. Each cottage has a simple two-light casement window. The 18th-century profile is visible in the gable end, which also includes gable and axial stacks. A stone in the center notes that George Fenwicke, with funds left by Catherine Dulson of Keythorpe, "bought and gave these 3 apartments" for three ancient poor women.
