Description
The Gumley War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled on Saturday, 20 June 1920. It is located in the middle of the scheduled remains of the Gumley medieval settlement.
The memorial is made of stone and Swithland Slate and stands on a grassy area near the cricket ground, surrounded by a wooden fence. It features a stone in-filled wheel cross atop a tall shaft, which has a carved sword on its front face. Above a square base, there is a carved wreath, and the memorial includes three slate tablets, all set on a two-tiered step.
The inscription on the slate panel on the front face reads: "TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND / IN UNDYING REMEMBRANCE / OF THOSE WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES FOR THE / DELIVERANCE OF THEIR / COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919 / LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT / THAT THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN."
On the left side of the memorial, the slate panel reads: "MEN WHO SERVED / (NAMES)," while the slate panel on the right side states: "KILLED IN ACTION / (NAMES)."
