Description
Welland House, located at Nos 15 and 17 on the southeast side of The Square, is a 18th-century building featuring a facade made of ironstone, with a brick rear and a slate roof. It stands two storeys tall and has four gabled dormers above. The building showcases a well-crafted moulded wood eaves cornice and includes six sash windows with glazing bars. On the ground floor, there are two large angled bays. The dormers are adorned with two-light Gothick arched windows that have finials and scalloped bargeboards. There are also two mid-18th century doorcases made of moulded stone, each with reeded pilasters, panelled reveals, and open pediments.
Additionally, set into the east wall of No 15 is a polished granite stone tablet from around 1903, which commemorates those who died in the South African War from 1899 to 1902. The ironstone used in the facade is said to have come from the old Church of St Mary in Arden.
