Description

This First World War memorial was erected in 1920, with additional names added after the Second World War. The memorial is constructed from stone, with metal used for the sundial's gnomon. It comprises a tall, slightly tapering square-section column with chamfered edges and run-out stops, topped by a projecting square head featuring a sundial on the front face. A finial consisting of three orbs sits above the head. The column stands directly on the upper step of a seven-stepped platform, with inscriptions carved into the front faces of the steps. The inscription, in incised lettering, reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND / TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / OF 1914 - 1918 FROM THIS PARISH / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE / ALSO TO THOSE WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939 - 1945 / FOR OUR TOMORROW / THEY GAVE THEIR / TODAY / (NAMES)". The memorial rises to a height of approximately 4 metres.
