Description

This is an 18th-century house, originally a farmhouse, which was substantially altered and Gothicised in 1865 for Benedict John Angell and converted into a hunting box. The house is constructed of brick with stone dressings, and has slate roofs with two brick gable stacks. The south front comprises an altered 18th-century range with 2½ storeys and three bays. A stone band runs along the first floor, and there is a dentilled eaves cornice. The central doorway is flanked by 19th-century canted bays with cross windows. Above, three cross windows are set within stone quoins and supported by hoodmoulds. A datestone inscribed “J C 1771” is located to the left of the central window. Three gabled dormers are above the main roofline. To the left is a 19th-century, two-storey, two-bay addition with bargeboarded gables and a brick string course. The left bay has a two-storey pointed bay window with Gothic tracery; the right bay has a polygonal bay window with a two-light pointed arch window above. The west elevation incorporates a brick plinth and a first-floor string. It features a two-storey tower with a circular, corbelled staircase turret topped with a conical roof and a two-light pointed arch window with a lancet above. Two small plaques are inscribed with "1865" and "B.I.A." To the right of the tower is a gabled bay with a two-light window with a flat arch, followed by a three-light oriel window with a conical roof. A corbelled-out stack is situated to the right again. All windows throughout the house have tracery.
