Description
No. 38 Church Street is a house dating from the 16th century or early 17th century, with some later alterations. It is constructed of finely coursed squared rubble, heightened in brick, and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is designed in an L shape and has two storeys.
The main range consists of two units, with a single bay to the left of the door that features a three-light stone ovolo moulded mullioned window on the ground floor. The doorway is set within a chamfered four-centred stone architrave, complete with a hood mould. To the right of the doorway is a four-light stone mullioned window, which also has a drop-ended hood mould. On the upper floor, there is a single four-light wood mullioned casement window.
A gable wing projects to the right of the main range, which has one blocked upper window in the gable. The wing features a three-light ovolo moulded stone mullion window with a hood mould, along with another blocked stone mullioned window on its outer face. Inside the wing, there are two three-light wood mullioned casements, one on each floor, with the lower window set in a stone architrave. There is evidence that the building was raised from a single storey in ironstone rubble before the later brick heightening. A possible cruck truss may be present within the structure.
