Description

Manor Croft is a house dating from the early 16th century, with extensions added in 1779 and further alterations in the 19th century. The visible construction combines exposed timber framing with red brick infilling, some laid in a herringbone pattern. The timber frame is arranged in large panels with angle braces; the 18th-century extension features mock timber framing. The house has a slate roof and end stacks on a gable parapet to the left and a tall red brick stack in the centre. Originally, it comprised a storeyed hall range with a cross wing. The eaves were raised slightly over the wall-plate to the left, indicating the division between the 16th and 18th century builds, and feature a gabled semi-dormer with moulded bargeboards. The gabled cross wing to the right also has decorated and moulded bargeboards. The two-storey front has an irregular four-window arrangement, with wood-framed casements on the left and wood-mullioned casements with diamond lattice glazing on the right. A large wagon entrance is located to the left, with double boarded doors. A boarded door to the left of the entrance has a 19th-century gabled hood on curved brackets. A 19th-century gabled porch on timber supports is located to the left of the extreme right-hand window. Inside, much carpentry is visible. The parlour, the front room of the wing, features a ceiling beam with a cavetto moulding and run-out stops; a beam in the hall has a simple chamfer. The roof is a queen-post roof, while the rear part of the wing was re-roofed with a king-post, potentially indicating a late 17th-century rebuilding.
