Description

Garat's Hay is a large house built in the early 19th century and later in 1896. It features granite and slate rubble stone that is rendered, along with buff brick, some of which is rendered, and a roof that combines Swithland slate and plain tiles with various ridge stacks. The house is square and has two storeys, with the main entrance located to the left of the road front, which also includes a secondary pavement door. The entrance front and the secondary door were added in 1896, while the main garden front to the left and the rear garden front are from the early 19th century.

The entrance front has a central doorway accessed by stone steps, featuring a two-leaved part-glazed door with an overlight and a single light on either side. The windows have leaded lights dating from around 1900, some of which are stained glass. Above the entrance, there is a Swithland slate canopy. To the left on the first floor, there is a canted oriel bay with sash windows. The main garden front to the left has a battlemented parapet and a central two-storey canted section that includes a Gothic arched doorway with two-leaved part-glazed doors and a 6/6 sash window above, which has a hood mould over it. There are additional sash windows on the canted sides and two 6/6 sashes on either side of this section, although the first-floor windows at the far left and right are blank.

The road front, built in 1896, has a buff brick ground floor and rendered upper levels, featuring nine windows, mostly 6/6 sashes. The door is located centre-right and is accessed by three stone steps within a flat-topped porch, which is supported on the left by a column and on the right by a stone-coped wall of a one-storey extension. The first floor to the left has a twin gable with jettying. The rear garden front, to the right of the road front, has six similar sash windows and canted two-storey bays with sash windows at each end. Inside, the entrance hall features a window and a part-glazed screen, both with leaded lights from around 1900, some of which are stained glass. The building has group value with the Church of St. Mary in the Elms.
