Description

This stable block dates from 1817 and is located at Ratcliffe on the Wreake. Constructed primarily of red brick with a Swithland slate roof, the building comprises a three-storey central range topped with a pyramid roof, and single-storey wings extending to either side, with hipped roofs at their outer ends. Wide, bracketed eaves run along the building. The central range features three recessed arches with rounded heads; the central arch contains a doorway, while the others are fitted with two-light sash windows. Stone bands are visible throughout. The first floor has three panels, the central one displaying a clock face, and the others bearing plaques with the arms of the Earls Ferrers. There are three blank openings on each side of the second floor. At the apex of the roof, there was formerly the base of a small, domed, octagonal cupola, which was removed in 1983. The wings feature three similar arches with segmental heads. A single-storey extension has been added to the right end, incorporating double gates and a further single-storey building. A yard is situated within the complex.
