Description

Stone House is a house dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, with later alterations in the late 18th century and restoration in the late 20th century. It features rubble stone walls, a plinth, and quoins, along with timber-framed gables that have brick nogging and plain tile roofs. The house has two ridge chimney stacks and a single side wall stack. It consists of two parallel ranges with gable ends facing the street, and includes a cross wing from 1797 at the rear. The building is two storeys high with an attic.

The street-facing front has a slightly recessed brick centre that contains a 4-centred arched door and a 2-light casement window above. The gables on either side have 3-light casements on the ground floor and 2-light windows above, with smaller 2-light casements in the attic. The north-east wall features a 3-light casement to the left and a 2-light casement to the right, above two 2-light casements. The south-west wall is blank. The rear wall includes a glazed late 20th-century conservatory across the right wing, while the left section is obscured by a later lower rendered addition.

Inside, the house retains much of its original layout, including some original stop-chamfered oak spine beams. An inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer is present in the dining room. The roofs maintain their original timber structure, with trusses featuring simple collars, some arched braces, and original purlins. The attics have lime-ash floors. It is noted that a building was reputedly constructed on this site in 1402 as a hunting lodge.
