Description
The Elms is a house built in 1835/6 for Samuel Burchall, a local brewer. It is constructed of buff brick in Flemish bond and features a Swithland slate roof with brick end stacks. The building has two storeys and a three-window range of 2/2 sashes, all set under gauged brick lintels. The central doorway includes a six-panel door, an overlight, and bootscrapers, accessed by stone steps. At the rear, there are two wings with some windows that have horizontal sliding glazing-bar sashes. Inside, the house retains a marble hall floor, a stick-baluster staircase with a wreathed handrail, two marble fireplaces, and six and four-panel doors. The land for the house was acquired in 1834, it was built by Daniel Simpson, and it was first rated in 1836. This information comes from the owner, who is the great-granddaughter of Samuel Burchall.
