Description

The Church of St Mary dates to the 14th and 15th centuries, with substantial rebuilding in 1846. It is constructed from Charnwood granite rubble with stone dressings, and has a slate roof with stone-coped gables. The church comprises a west tower, a nave, aisles, and a chancel. The west tower is of the 14th or 15th century, but was restored at a later date, while the remainder of the church was completely rebuilt in 1846. The tower has three stages and is topped with gargoyles and battlements. It has a low west door with a Perpendicular two-light window above, and four similar bell openings with renewed tracery. The rest of the building features stepped and angle buttresses, some rising to crocketted finials. The windows have curvilinear tracery with hood moulds and label stops. A Norman-style door is set into the north wall of the west end. The south door has an ogee-shaped carved surround. The nave and aisles have four bays. Inside, the arcades have moulded arches springing from clustered piers. There is a clerestory of small trefoils, and an open truss roof springing from carved corbels. The chancel also has a similar roof, which is painted. The windows include hood moulds and label stops. The east window's lower lights are blind, and the windows contain stained glass dating from 1904, 1901, and 1920. A fixed hatchment is located on the north wall, possibly fixed to plaster.
