Description
Strancliffe Hall is a large house dated 1868, located on Cotes Road in Barrow upon Soar. The building is constructed of brick and features a hipped slate roof. It has two storeys and an entrance front consisting of four bays. The design includes brick angle quoins, stone brackets that support an overhanging roof, and a stone string course. The sash windows have glazing bars, with some featuring stone architraves and consoles.
The entrance porch is supported by Tuscan columns and has a heavy entablature. The doorway is topped with a segmental brick arch that includes a stone keystone displaying the date and initials C.E., along with a traceried fanlight. To the right of the door, there is a full-height bay window with leaded glass on the first floor.
The garden front, which is on the southwest side, has three bays with a recessed center. The central bay features a curved projecting porch with Tuscan columns and a round-headed door. Above this porch is a wrought iron balcony, flanked by three tall round-arched leaded lights. The outer bays have bow windows on the ground floor, consisting of three lights, and canted wooden bay windows above. The lower and middle windows have flat stone heads. The roof extends on stone brackets and is carried straight across the recessed center of the building. The decorative eaves brackets are repeated on the tall chimney stacks.
Inside, the recessed porch leads to a central full-height hall that has a circular gallery at the first-floor level.
