Description
The Mountsorrel Cross is a village market cross from the medieval period, located approximately 250 metres southeast of the church on Swithland Main Street. Originally situated in the Main Street at Mountsorrel, it was moved to its current location in the late 18th century. The base features five round steps and a square socket stone, which is intricately carved with bats that have their wings extended at the corners. The tall monolithic shaft is adorned with heads and various devices. The topstone is an openwork design in an upright flat hexagonal shape, with a wide side and central bar, possibly representing a weaver's shuttle. This stone is also carved with small figures and grotesque heads, and the top has a broken Gothic crocket. A charter allowing the holding of a market at Mountsorrel was granted by Edward I in 1292. The cross is designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
