Description

The Congregational Church, dated 1770 on bricks, features an extended cruciform plan from 1792. It underwent significant changes, including refenestration in 1880, refronting in 1882, and a vestry rebuild in 1900. The church is constructed of pale red brick, with the front made of larger bricks, and has a slate roof. The cruciform plan includes a vestry in the east angle. The 1882 front displays offset buttresses, a coped gable with a moulded verge, and octagonal stone finials. On either side, at ground floor and gallery levels, there are pairs of arched lights in chamfered stone surrounds. The center of the gable features a round window with beam moulding and a chamfered hoodmould. A central porch has a coped gable, finial, and a moulded arch over double doors. Each side of the church has a gabled projection with marginally glazed windows from 1880. At ground floor level, there are two paired lights with arched glazing bars and cambered heads, above which is a large arched window with 'Y' tracery flanked by slightly shorter single arched lights. The rear wing has similar windows but has been altered. Inside, there is a gallery around three sides, pews from 1889, other late 19th-century fittings, and a 1930s organ and choir stalls. Commemorative tablets honor William Hudson from 1811, Rev William Bedford from 1863, and his wife from 1859. The church was founded in 1662, and a small square chapel was built in 1706. Traces of this early building may be incorporated into the present structure, though they are not obvious.
