Description

No. 51 Church Street is a cottage that dates from the early 14th century and mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered rubble stone and red brick, featuring a plain first-floor band. It has plain tile roofs, with a brick-coped gable on the north side and brick gable stacks on the south and east sides, along with a stepped eaves cornice on the west front.

The cottage is two storeys high and has an L-plan layout. The south gable front includes a flat-headed, three-light horizontal sliding small pane sash window on the ground floor, and a three-light small casement window above it. The west front features a segment-headed doorcase with a plank door to the south, a ruinous window to the north, and a blank wall above. The recessed part to the north has a two-light window on the ground floor and a gabled late 19th-century roof dormer with casements above.

Inside the rear wing, there is part of a large 14th-century timber fireplace. This fireplace has a richly moulded bressumer with a plain central block, decorated at either end with deeply undercut leaf carvings. The timber jamb on the north side is similarly moulded, with matching leaf carvings at the top. It appears that the south side of the fireplace was likely cut away when a passage was created through the building in the northeast corner.
