Description
The Railway Bridge over the River Trent, built in 1867, is a Grade II listed structure located in the parish of Melbourne, on Trent Lane, Kings Newton. This bridge is constructed of cast iron with wooden decking and rock-faced stone. It features a wide design supported by six rows of columns, with stone abutments at both ends. Each row consists of five columns with bracketed tops; the outer columns have lower bracketed tops that support pierced braces with central roundels on either side, along with a central pier that has an attached half column. The inner columns support riveted plate girders, while the outer columns are adorned with raised and fielded panels above the half columns and lattice work girders on either side. The bridge has wooden decking on top and pierced parapets along the sides, with panels at the base and plain piers. This bridge is part of the Derby to Ashby line, which was opened in 1867 primarily to facilitate the transport of milk and vegetables to London.
