Description
Gresley Old Hall is a large house, now used as a Miners' Welfare, that dates from 1664, although it may incorporate work from the 16th century. It is believed that Sir Christopher Alleyne, who acquired the site of Church Gresley Priory in 1556, used stone from the priory to build Gresley Hall. The building is set in a remnant of parkland to the south of the junction between Gresley Wood Road and George Street.
Constructed of red brick with stone dressings and a tiled roof, Gresley Old Hall has an L-shaped plan. The front part is 2½ storeys high and features unusual Flemish gables on the crosswing, each topped with a small pediment. Two dormers extend through the eaves of the main section. The windows are modern casements set in stone surrounds with hoodmoulds, although some of the stonework and windows may be 19th-century additions. The original stone doorcase includes a lintel and a datestone. The higher rear wing is 3½ storeys tall and has similar fenestration, while a lower 2-storey wing adjoins it.
Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase with turned balusters on a solid string. The second floor features some late 17th-century mouldings and earlier 17th-century stops on the beams. One wine cellar and cock lofts remain in the attics. Various mid-20th-century additions are present but are not of special interest.
