Description
Anchor Church is a late 18th-century folly created from a natural cave that has been enlarged and shaped. It is made of sandstone and features a roughly rectangular room carved into the cliff of the escarpment south of the River Trent. The building includes a round arched doorway and several roughly rectangular window openings. Inside, the space is hollowed out into two rooms that are divided by a two-bay arcade. This structure is traditionally associated with an anchorite.
