Description
Bretby Old School is a building that was originally a school and is now a house. It dates from 1806 and is possibly designed by William Martin, the architect for the Earl of Chesterfield's estate. The building features a 20th-century upper storey on the southeast side. It is constructed of red brick with plain tile hipped roofs and has three brick ridge stacks. The structure is one and two storeys high, with an elevation facing the Green that has a symmetrical arrangement of two, one, and two bays.
The two-storey projecting central bay contains a three-light four-centred arched window on each floor, with splayed brick voussoirs. Between these windows is a stone panel that reads "BRADBY SCHOOL/OPENED FOR THE ADMISSION OF SCHOLARS/OCTOBER 20th 1806." To the left of the central bay is a gabled wooden porch with latticework sides and a half-glazed door. Further left are two similar two-light windows with four-centred arches. To the right, there are two taller windows of the same style, along with two gabled 20th-century dormers above. The building is listed for its group value only.
