Description
This is an extensive model farm complex, dating from 1890. It is constructed of red brick with Welsh slate roofs, incorporating timber and cast iron detailing. The layout is broadly E-shaped, with the back of the E facing north and incorporating covered yards on the south side. West and east ranges extend southwards, enclosing a central yard.
The two-storey back range of the E-shaped building has a central tower-like dovecote with a pyramid roof, lantern, and weathervane. The north side features segment-headed doorways and windows on the ground floor. The south side's central portion is twin-gabled, with decorative brick corbelling. The symmetrical front features a pair of segment-headed doorways in the centre, flanked by large flat-arched entrances with sliding doors. Keyed circular openings are in the gable, and datestones inscribed "1890" are positioned above. The gabled covered yards on either side have four bays of iron columns supporting the slate roof, with timber valencing and decorative terminations to the gable ends.
The single-storey west range repeats the gable found on the centre of the E-shaped building and has a band of alternating windows and stable-type doors, all with segment heads. The two-storey east range provides a full-height entrance into the yard. Beyond this is a barn with segment-headed openings and decorative iron grills to the breathers. Adjacent to the barn is an attached cottage with a gable stack. The east-facing elevation has a central doorway with a lean-to porch, flanked by three-light segment-headed casements. Above are two three-light flat-arched casements. A further gabled range, with a cart hovel featuring openings to the north and divided by brick piers with rounded angles, is attached to the east.
The model farm was built for the Ratcliffes of Newton Park.
