Description
The ruin of a stable in Repton Park dates from the early 19th century and features a rectangular plan with side wings that may have been coach houses. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings and red brick, and the outer walls show traces of brown cement render likely applied in the early 19th century.
The stable is built into a hillside, with an overgrown roof. The west elevation of this single-storey building has three bays. The central bay contains a moulded and keyed round-arched doorway with a squared surround, panelled spandrels, and a moulded horizontal hoodmould. This doorway is flanked by substantial buttresses that have remnants of offsets. The outer bays feature two closely spaced single-light windows, each with recessed and cavetto moulded surrounds and a horizontal hoodmould. The thick walls and buttresses are designed to counteract the potential forward thrust of earth from the hillside. In front of the building, the slope has been modified to create a platform for the drive.
Inside, the stable consists of a single space with a depressed stone barrel-vaulted roof. The end walls are lined with brick, and the rear wall retains remnants of a brick lining with narrow banding.
