Description

The Crown Hotel and No 32, Higham is a public house that was originally four cottages built in the 18th century, with a 19th-century front and 20th-century additions at the rear. The building is constructed of coursed squared gritstone, featuring gritstone dressings and quoins, and has plain tile roofs from the 20th century. There are stone stacks on the north gable end and two ridge stacks, along with two brick stacks on the south side. The gables are stone coped with moulded kneelers on No 32 to the south.

The structure is two storeys high with six bays. On the south side, there is a flush doorcase flanked by horizontal sliding sashes. The north side features a flush quoined doorcase with plain sashes in flush surrounds. Between the door and the southern window, there is a four-stepped mounting block. Further north, there is an inserted doorcase with two glazing bar sashes in flush surrounds, and at the extreme north, another flush quoined doorcase. All doors are from the 20th century.

Inside, the building has been mainly altered but retains some original features, including chamfered beams and a bracketed stone fireplace on the ground floor. The first-floor room at the rear dates from the late 18th century and includes a Venetian window on the north side, along with a pair of stone fireplaces that have moulded mantle pieces over lintels with concave upper corners.
