Description
The entrance gatepiers and attached walls adjacent to Nos 35 and 37 form the former west gateway to Wingerworth Hall, which has since been demolished. These structures date from the late 18th century and consist of three pairs of square ashlar gatepiers, with one pier partially demolished. The piers are massive and made of ashlar gritstone, with the two outer piers of each group linked by a short ashlar wall. The tall outer piers reach the level of the eaves cornices of the nearby lodges at Nos 35 and 37 New Road. The moulding of the wall plinth connects with the top of the base block of the middle pair of piers in each group. The outer piers feature projecting moulded cornices and are topped with urns, while the remaining piers, except for the partially demolished one on the south side of the driveway, have ball finials and moulded cornices.
