Description

Nos. 238 and 240 on Longedge Lane are a pair of semi-detached houses built in the mid to late 19th century. They are constructed from regularly coursed Coal Measures Sandstone, featuring channelled ashlar dressings, quoins, oversailing eaves and verges, and tall end wall stacks with moulded caps, along with a central front wall stack at the junction of the two houses. The roof is decorated with plain tiles, consisting of three plain courses followed by a two-course band of pointed tiles, and finished with crested clay ridge tiles.

Designed in the Vernacular Revival style, although not in the Derbyshire vernacular, each house has two bays. They feature an advanced outer gable and a gabled inner bay, with a hipped single-storey porch at the angle of the two bays. The outer gable includes a central three-light mullioned and transomed window, with a matching two-light window above, both set within quoined jambs and beneath segmental relieving arches. The windows are fitted with metal casement frames and margin leaded lights. In the gable apex, there is a lancet ventilation opening. The inner gabled bay mirrors this window arrangement but includes a small plaque with a heraldic device at the gable apex. Each porch has a front doorway beneath a four-centred arched lintel, featuring planked doors with elaborate strap hinges.
