Description

The Elms is a house dating from around 1720, constructed from coursed sandstone with sandstone dressings. It features stone slate roofs and three stone gable end stacks, along with stone coped gables that include some moulded kneelers and a parapet on the main facade. The building is designed in an L-plan and stands three storeys high with quoins.

The south-west elevation has pilaster strips at the corners, a cornice, and stringcourses separating each floor. It has five bays, with a central doorway that has a rusticated surround, a lintel with a keystone, and a dripmould. The doorway is fitted with a 20th-century panelled door and a rectangular overlight, flanked by two glazing bar sash windows in plain raised stone surrounds. Above this, there are five similar windows, the central one featuring a keystone that connects to the stringcourse, and five smaller windows above.

The south-east elevation consists of three bays. It includes a doorway with a flush stone lintel and jambs, a window with a flush stone surround to the left, and a three-light window with a stone surround to the right. Above, there is a two-light window, a single light, and a three-light square section flush mullion window, with a similar arrangement above, although the central single light is blocked. There are 20th-century additions in the north-west angle.

Inside, there is one panelled room featuring raised and fielded panelling and a double cornice, but no chimney-piece. The staircase has turned balusters, with three on each tread, and the centre baluster is spiral. Each tread is adorned with a raised and fielded panel and a scrolled bracket.
