Description
This is a 1640 farmhouse, now disused, located in the parish of Chinley, Buxworth and Brownside. The building is constructed of roughly-coursed gritstone rubble with substantial quoins, and has gritstone dressings. It is roofed with stone slates, and features a stone gable end stack and a large ridge stack.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and originally comprised four bays. The east elevation shows three wide bays, with a central bay set back; a narrower recessed bay is to the north. A doorcase on the east side has chamfered quoins and a shouldered lintel inscribed 'BWE 1640'. A second doorcase, with a quoined surround, moulded architrave and a shallow-pitched pointed head, is also present on the east side, containing an early studded plank door. In the recessed bay is a large recessed and chamfered mullion window, retaining only the central major mullion. Beside it is a chamfered window, now with 19th-century casements. Above the north bay is an inserted 19th-century door. Above the first door is a recessed and chamfered opening, and to the south is an 18th-century window with a single mullion; the southernmost window is covered by ivy. The rear elevation contains a doorcase with a moulded architrave, and an early leaded light in the stair window.
The interior features ovolo moulded beams, a bracketed stone fireplace, plasterwork including a roundel inscribed 'B R ?', and an 18th-century corner cupboard.
