Description
Middlemores Almshouses is a terrace of seven almshouses, now reduced to five, built in 1711 and extended in 1735, 1829, and 1904. They were constructed by the charity established through the will of Joseph Middlemore. The building is made of red brick and features a plain tile roof with five brick ridge stacks. It has gabled dormers with brick copings and plain kneelers, and is a single storey structure.
The south elevation consists of fourteen bays. From left to right, there are three wooden cross windows, with the third originally being a door, followed by a doorway, three more cross windows (again with the third formerly a door), another doorway, three cross windows (the third previously a door), a doorway, three cross windows, a doorway, and a final cross window, all under flat brick arches. The doors are mostly 19th century half-glazed, except for one 20th century panelled door.
To the right, there is a projecting gabled bay with one similar window. Above this bay are three gables with slate inscription panels. The left gable details the original charity of 1711, funded by Joseph Middlemore's will and executed by his wife. The second gable commemorates the addition of two more almshouses in 1735 by Winifrede Middlemore's will, while the third gable notes further enlargement in 1829. The right-hand gable includes a panel that records the construction of another house in 1904.
