Description

Bailey's Factory, now known as Norton Plastics, is a lace and hosiery factory that dates from possibly the 1830s and was completed in 1855. The building is constructed of red brick with gritstone dressings and quoins, topped with a hipped tile roof. It stands four storeys tall and features a south elevation with a layout of five-three-five bays, where the central three bays are slightly advanced. This section includes quoins and a dentilled pediment.

The central entrance is a rusticated round arched doorway with a keyblock and double doors. To the right of the entrance, there are two glazing bar sash windows under stone lintels, a doorway, and three additional glazing bar sashes. On the left side, there are six glazing bar sashes. The first floor has twelve glazing bar sashes under stone lintels, along with a doorway in the fourth opening from the left, and a continuous sill band. Above this, there are thirteen similar glazing bar sashes, followed by thirteen smaller casements and fixed lights on the top floor.

The rear elevation consists of thirteen bays, featuring glazing bar sashes under stone lintels and a continuous sill band on the first floor. Additionally, there is a three-storey range attached to the west, which has a four-bay elevation facing the road and is said to date from the 1830s. The factory was built in 1855 for Bailey, Sons & Co, who were manufacturers of lace and hosiery.
