Description

The Grammar School is a school building dating from around 1720, which was endowed by Elizabeth Grey of Risley Hall in her will of that year. It is constructed of red brick, sitting on a sandstone ashlar plinth with chamfered copings and sandstone dressings. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with plain tiles, featuring a slight bell shape at the eaves, rounded stone copings, and plain brick kneelers at the gables, along with a stepped and dentilled brick cornice.

The building is a single storey plus garret and consists of four bays. The main elevation has steps leading up to a central doorcase, which features a wide, raised, plain stone surround with a chamfered inner edge and double panelled doors below. This doorcase is set within a tall flat-headed recess that matches its width and is similar in height to the very tall windows on either side. There are two very tall 2-light windows on each side of the door, nearly reaching the full height of the building, with timber mullions and double transoms, all under wedge stone lintels. The windows have 20th-century leaded lights, either fixed or as casements.

The west and east gable walls have similar central windows with a dentilled band at the eaves level, as well as 2-light garret windows with dentilled drip moulds; the western garret window retains its original brick mullion. There is a 20th-century lean-to extension at the rear. The interior does not contain any original features. This building is paired with the Latin College, which is located on the opposite side of the School House. Although the Derbyshire Victoria County History states that the school was built in 1758, it appears on a map from 1722, which is held at the Derbyshire County Record Office.
