Description
The remains of the Chapel of St Mary and St John the Baptist, located to the south of Stydd Hall, date back to the early 13th century and feature later alterations. Constructed from sandstone, the tops of the walls are capped with plain tiles. The surviving structure includes the south wall and a corner of the east wall, but little else remains. The south wall has a plain plinth and three thin chamfered lancet windows, each with continuous moulded hoods and sill bands. The north elevation of these windows features nook shafts on the sides, adorned with beautifully carved foliaged capitals. Above the arches, there is a moulding with a hoodmould that springs from finely carved corbel heads or foliaged bosses. To the east side of these windows, the plinth includes a low doorway with a segmental arched head. The east wall on the west side has another carved corbel head and the remains of another nook shaft. Inside the chapel, there is a plain stone circular font that is likely contemporary with the building. The site is also designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
