Description

Thatched Cottage is a 17th-century cottage located in the parish of Shirley, off Church Lane. The timber frame was originally exposed, but it was later encased in brick and pebbledash in the 20th century. The cottage has a thatched roof with a rendered central stack and an external gable stack. It is a single storey building with garrets, arranged in a baffle entry plan.

The west elevation has a double-fronted design. The central doorway features a 20th-century plank door, flanked by two-light windows with 20th-century metal casements. Two 19th-century gabled dormers are positioned above, each containing a two-light casement window. A 20th-century bay to the left is not of listable quality.

The ground floor room at the south end retains visible box frame construction in the rear and side walls, including a large fireplace with a stone lintel, and beamed ceilings. The upper floor room at the south end features a stick and plaster chimney breast. A significant portion of the original timber frame is visible on the upper floor. A brick outshot extends from the rear, with a catslide roof.
