Description

This early 19th century building, located in the rear yard of number 24 (Walton Bank), is believed to have been part of the prison quarters for French officers captured during the Napoleonic Wars. The red brick structure is two to three storeys high, situated on sloping ground, and features a hipped slate roof. Although modern roofing has been added against the facade, it appears that there were originally four pairs of fixed windows with small casements and stone architraves, positioned halfway up the wall. The interior still contains remnants of the cells.
