Description
Knoll House is a dated 1788 ashlar-built house in Tansley. It is a three-storey structure with two bays of three-light mullioned windows and a single-light window, all featuring plain surrounds and single glazing bars. The central doorway has a square head, rusticated quoins, a double keyblock, a lintel carved with ornaments and initials, and is topped by an enriched carved panel and moulded cornice. A modern or restored four-panel door with a half-round glazed top panel is set within the doorway. The third storey features a small central arched niche flanked by fluted pilasters, with the date 1788 inscribed on the arch. Quoins accent the sides of the building, while the coped gable ends have kneelers and large acorn finials. End stacks are present, along with plain eaves and slate covering. The interior retains two carved stone chimney-pieces, both dated 1788. The house was recently well restored.
