Description
Scholes Mill is a former cotton spinning mill, later used for the manufacture of red tape and currently utilized for storage as of April 1990. It was built in 1797 for Samuel Unwin and features coursed gritstone rubble with a Welsh slate roof, along with some later brick ancillary buildings. The mill has a plan where the wheel was set transversely within the building, contained by stone cross walls that do not extend above ground level, with associated gear located in low outshuts.
The mill stands three storeys high and has a 16-window range that is almost identical on both sides. All windows are under flat lintels with stone sills, featuring 30-pane cast iron frames with a small central opening. There is a left-hand stone end stack for heating and a tall brick end stack to the right, which abuts the end wall and was part of a dismantled engine house that replaced the water-powered system in the late 19th century. A later skylight has been added.
Attached to the left of the mill is the manager's house, which is 2½ storeys tall and has a 4-window range. The ground floor features two tripartite sash windows and a doorway with a rectangular overlight in stone surrounds, the latter having a panelled door. There is a larger entrance to the right under an elliptical arch. The first floor has four windows, two of which are tripartite, all with sashes. The upper half-storey contains flat-headed sash windows. The rear of the house is similar but has more replaced sashes.
The interior of the mill is largely intact, except for the machinery, and has power rise to all floors except the attic. It features a king post roof with angle struts. The house is modest and retains some contemporary features.
