Description
Cannon Mill, including the mill wheel, is a Grade II listed building located in Chesterfield, believed to have been constructed before 1788. It was part of the Griffin Foundry operated by John and Ebenezer Smith and Co. from 1775 to 1833, and it underwent restoration in 1957.
The building is made of square red brick and features a pantile roof with slate verges and a coped gable end adorned with ornamental cresting. It stands two storeys tall and has three blank Gothic arches on its eastern facade. An oval cast iron plaque, which depicts a cannon and cannon balls, is dated 1816, indicating its historical connection to the cannon foundry. Additionally, there is a large overshot iron water wheel associated with the mill.
